WrestleMania, the name given to the grandest event in the world of Sports Entertainment started back on March 31 st, 1985 at New York's Madison Square Garden by the WWE's Chairman Vince McMahon. WrestleMania is said to be the championship of wrestling as is the Super Bowl is to professional football or as the World Series is to Major League Baseball. Roman numerals were used for some of the Wrestlemania events to show the importance in the comparison with the Super Bowl.

Wrestlemania Returns to Houston in 2009

Wrestling's biggest event will return to Houston when WrestleMania XXV is staged for the first time at Reliant Stadium.

With all the subtlety of a body slam, World Wrestling Entertainment representatives held a press conference at the stadium Wednesday featuring flashy videos, rap music and even a clip featuring Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Company officials hyped the potential financial spinoffs for the city during the year-long build up to the event, to be held on April 5, 2009.

Geof Rochester, WWE's executive vice president of marketing, says the secret to the company's success is more about "leveraging content" and building brand awareness rather than merely staging wrestling contests.

The event is expected to rival this year's WrestleMania XXIV, held March 30 in Orlando , Fla. , which had 74,635 attendees at the Florida Citrus Bowl and sold nearly $6 million in tickets at the gate.

Rochester said the Houston event, depending on the final seating configuration, could approach 75,000 people and will generate $50 million in pay-per-view revenue from fans watching around the world.

WrestleMania drew 67,925 fans to the AstroDome when it was last held in Houston in 2001 when Stone Cold Steve Austin regained his WWE championship from The Rock. At the time, it was the largest single grossing live event in the company's history.

Wednesday's event was attended by wrestling superstar Ric Flair, who said in an interview that his appearance this year at WrestleMania XXIV was his last inside the ring as a wrestler. He has since moved into an "ambassador" role with the publicly traded corporation.
